Few things beat watching a child's face light up at the top of a trail when the whole of Lake George suddenly opens up below them. The good news for families around here is that you do not need long legs or a full day to earn those views. The Lake George area is full of short, gentle hikes with big payoffs — panoramic summits, a tumbling waterfall, and paths smooth enough for the smallest hikers. Here are five of the best kid-friendly hikes near Lake George, each with breathtaking scenery that little legs can handle.
1. The Pinnacle, Bolton Landing
Just five minutes outside Bolton Landing, The Pinnacle is a family favorite for good reason. The out-and-back trail runs roughly 1.5 to 2 miles round trip and takes a little over an hour, climbing gently through mixed hardwood forest with only a few steeper steps near the top.
The reward is a sweeping, nearly 270-degree panorama that takes in the Tongue Mountain range, the Narrows, Shelving Rock, Dome Island, and the Town of Bolton. The trail is maintained by the Lake George Land Conservancy, and leashed dogs are welcome, so the whole family — four-legged members included — can come along.
2. Prospect Mountain, Lake George Village
Prospect Mountain offers arguably the most spectacular view in the region, with 100-mile sightlines over Lake George and the Adirondacks from its 2,030-foot summit. What makes it so kid-friendly is the choice: ambitious families can hike up, while those with very little ones (or a stroller-and-snacks situation) can drive the 5.5-mile Veterans Memorial Highway nearly to the top.
Either way, everyone arrives at the same jaw-dropping overlook. It is a great pick for a day when you want maximum view for minimum complaining.
3. Pilot Knob Ridge Preserve
About a ten-minute drive from Lake George Village, Pilot Knob is one of the most popular family hikes in the area. Kids love the abundant wildlife and wildflowers along the way, and the trail leads to a charming gazebo with lauded views out over the lake.
It is a gentle, rewarding outing that feels like an adventure without being a slog — and the gazebo makes a perfect snack stop and turnaround point.
4. Shelving Rock Falls
If your crew is more motivated by water than by summits, Shelving Rock Falls is the one. The walk winds through scenic woods to an enchanting waterfall, and the trail continues down to the shore of Lake George itself.
Pack a picnic, snacks, and swimsuits to make a full afternoon of it. One heads-up: reaching the trailhead means driving several miles on a gravel road, and it sits about 45 minutes from Lake George Village, so plan the drive into your day.
5. Gurney Lane Recreation Area, Queensbury
For the very youngest hikers, Gurney Lane is hard to beat. This Queensbury recreation area has wide, logging-road-sized trails — several of them flat enough for strollers — including a dedicated nature trail built with little ones in mind.
Better still, it doubles as a full family destination, with a playground and a pool on site. It is the kind of place where a short hike can easily turn into a whole happy afternoon outdoors.
Tips for hiking with little legs
Start early to beat both crowds and afternoon heat, and let kids set the pace — the goal is fun, not speed. Bring plenty of water and snacks, pack a small first-aid kit, and dress everyone in layers and sturdy shoes. Most of all, build in time to stop, look at bugs, skip rocks, and soak up the view. With kids, the journey really is the destination.
